Founded in 2017 by Michael Smith, Idle Furniture is a design based workshop that produces handcrafted furniture for both residential and commercial spaces.

Before starting Idle Furniture, Mike studied architecture at Newcastle University and worked at a number of architectural practices based in London. This experience forms the basis of our approach towards furniture design and our belief that well made, purposeful furniture can not only enhance the spaces we live in but also provide the foundations with which we base our daily routines.

Inspired by the guiding principles of the shaker movement; simplicity, utility and honesty and rooted within the notion that a traditional approach can be forward thinking, Idle Furniture blends time honoured craft techniques with contemporary design to create beautiful furniture that is made slow and built to last.

Every piece of timber here at Idle Furniture is hand picked by Mike from a number of sawmills across Yorkshire, carefully selecting each board to ensure it meets our standards.
